The Home Insurance Crunch: See What’s Happening in Your State

For years, insurance companies have found home insurance to be profitable. But what happens when climate change enters the mix?

This New York Times’ interactive allows you to see how insurance companies have fared as extreme weather has hit states across the country over a 10 year period. You may be surprised to see how the 50 states compare!

Questions:

  • How profitable has home insurance been in your state over the 10 year period? What types of climate related events happened that would explain any losses?
  • The article states that “a shaky insurance market threatens the entire economy.” Explain this statement. (Hint: read the article to learn about the connection)
  • How might a person who is looking to buy a home use this data?
  • How do you think this data will look 5 years from now? 10? 20? 50? Explain.
