Use FinViz to Demonstrate Stock Market Ups and Downs

FinViz’s interactive map visually depicts the S&P500 in real time, making it a fantastic tool to “show” students how the stock market responds to current events (DeepSeek anyone?) and other factors.

What makes the interactive great:

  • Companies are grouped by industries
  • Stock performance is depicted using color (green and red)
  • Company size is shown by how big of a box it has on the map
  • You can see how the market is doing over the past day, week, month(s), year, or more!

While using the interactive, you may want to ask questions like:

  • How has the market performed in the past day? Week? Month? Year?
  • What events might have caused the market to go up or down?
  • Why do you think some companies in the same industry perform well while others don’t?

Use NGPF’s accompanying worksheet, INTERACTIVE: What’s the S&P 500?, with students to guide them through the interactive and facilitate meaningful discussion!

Bonus resource: Watch TwoCents’ video, Will the AI Bubble Burst?, to provide context for recent events around DeepSeek and its impact on the US stock market.
