Just One Resource - ANALYZE: Should I Insure This Group?

Just One Resource

In this weekly blog post, the Curriculum team will highlight Just One Resource from our NGPF collection that maybe doesn't get the attention it deserves. Use it this week or bookmark it for later.

[The Resource]  ANALYZE: Should I Insure This Group?

The Gist: Insurance can be...well, let's face it...a boring challenging topic to teach students. So, here's a fun way to introduce how insurance works, from the insurance company's perspective. Students step into the shoes of the insurance company and have to decide, "Should I insure this group?".  This is a great activity to do at the beginning of an insurance unit before diving deeper into the more detailed aspects of insurance!

The Best Parts:

  • Having students play the role of the insurance company is a fun way for them to think about how insurance coverage can vary from person to person.
  • Students become familiar with 3 key questions insurance companies ask when deciding whether or not to insure a group of people.
  • Students understand why insurance companies may approve insurance for certain groups of people and not others.
  • This is a great activity to keep referencing as you make your way through the rest of your insurance unit and students learn more about other concepts in insurance (e.g. Deductibles, copays, etc). Reminding students to put themselves in the insurance company's position may help them better understand the insurance landscape as a whole!
