Teacher Talk
At Saturday's Virtual Back to School Conference, keynote speaker Dr. Jasmine McNealy will share how sales tricks—known as dark patterns—get money out of us, even when we don’t plan on spending. Find out more about McNealy, who is an attorney, critical public interest technologist, and social scientist who studies emerging media and technology. And register for her session here!
She earned a PhD in mass communication and a JD at the University of Florida, a M.Ed in Measurement, Evaluation, Statistics & Assessment at the University of Illinois-Chicago, and a BS in both Journalism and Afro-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin. Wow! A professor in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida, her research emphasizes technological ecosystems, privacy, surveillance, and data governance.
McNealy is also the founder and principal of The Alveary LLC, a strategy, research and design firm. She also founded ICED Labs, which investigates how technology is used in different environments, focusing on its impact, failures, and the actions of organizations, governments, and private individuals.
“Financially Inclined” is Marketplace’s first video podcast and its first show for teens. It's hosted by NGPF's Director of Partnerships and Educational Outreach, Yanely Espinal. Now in Season 3, each week she interviews influencers, high school students and financial experts, to help make learning about money fun and simple. The episode featuring McNealy is coming out soon!
McNealy is the author of “Consent (Still) Won’t Save Us,” a chapter in the book Feminist Cyberlaw to be published by University of California Press.
In the chapter, she considers the boundaries of consent and the limitations on the continued use of information control as the grounding for data protection regulation, especially with the accelerated use of artificial intelligence and algorithmic decision systems. (University of Florida)
